Personal Quotes
(December 2001, about Hrithik Roshan): I wish I looked as good as he does. And I wish I danced as well as he does!
Yes, I do have a close circle of friends and I am very fortunate to have them as friends. I feel very close to them I think friends are everything in life after your family. You come across lots of people all the time but you only make very few friends and you have to be true to them otherwise what's the point in life?
I'd rather sink trying to be different, than stay afloat like everyone else
I cannot repay my fans for what they have done for me, they have given me so much love and that love has taken me to the number 1 position where I am today, the only thing I can do for my fans is to never stop working, and to do films till the very end, it is the only way I can express my love for them.
To me, Devdas is the end of love stories. I've portrayed an obsessed lover, a nice lover, an angry lover, a romantic lover. And now I've played Devdas. For someone who doesn't even like love stories, I've played an awful lot of lovers. Personally speaking, I wouldn't see any of the romantic films I've acted in.
I'm the luckiest man in the world and I don't want to hide from the faces I'm acting for. So I don't surround myself with guards, I've never given an interview in which I've said I feel bad that I can't go shopping or I can't go to Chowpatty and eat bhelpuri without being mobbed. I'm not the kind of guy who goes out wearing dark glasses (I don't think I'm a big enough star to hide behind them, honest). I go to see movies in the cinema theatres, I go to restaurants with my family and friends even though I know people are going to disturb me there.
God has become a generic term like `mind blowing.' It is embarrassing. I would have said that to Amitabh Bachchan, Naseeruddin Shah, Nana Patekar. I used to tell them I want to stand in the same space as you. I've told Kamal Haasan, I just want to touch you. They are the gods of acting. When people call me God, I say, no, I'm still an angel or saint of acting. I still have a long way to go.
(August 2004): Awards that ignore me are losers.
(August 2004): I'm try-sexual. I try anything that's sexual.
(August 2004): I have no competition. Every year the names I'm pitted against keep changing. You can't cream the competition, you have to kill it.
I keep hearing that our films are escapist and unreal but I find our films the most real in the world. We don't have people going up in a rocket and single-handedly blowing up a meteor. We don't have a president on Air Force One saving the world or things coming out of people's stomachs. Our fantasies and escapism are real. It's just people singing and dancing in the street. If England had won the World Cup you would have seen people singing and dancing like that.
I don't like wearing dark glasses. I'm happy with the fact that people know me. I want people to scream and shout at me, I want people to trouble me when I'm having lunch, I like six bodyguards around me. I love being a star. I find it very strange when people who are famous say they don't want to be photographed. I don't want to be photographed first thing in the morning, I don't want people peeping into my bedroom, but besides that, it's a wonderful life.
"I haven't given up smoking. I'm very clear about it, it's a personal choice. I want to cut down on it. It shouldn't be made into an issue to say, damn good or damn bad. Whether I give it up or not shouldn't be an issue." (Movie Mag, May 2006)
"I was supposed to have done Rang De Basanti (2006), the guy on the motorbike. I didn't have the dates. They were shooting in Delhi and the dates were clashing with Paheli." (Movie Mag, May 2006)
"It's not like Steven Spielberg is waiting with a script for me. I don't think I'll ever be offered a great international film in my lifetime, so I'd rather be a king here. Moreover, Indian cinema is the greatest in the world. But of course, after spending three months in LA, London, and New York I found that our cinema is a little exaggerated. To make a mark in the West we have to reach their level without losing our identity, culture or songs. I don't want to star in a Hollywood film, but want to make a film that crosses over universally." (Movie Mag, May 2006)
On trying to get Paheli (2005) an Oscar nomination: "There's a misreport here about our lobbying at the Oscars. The understanding that we have of the Oscars is very different from how it really is. Because Indian film, foreign films are not known, you're supposed to hire a PR company which we did. It's not as if you just go there, show your films, lobby and talk to them. You're not allowed to lobby as in you're not allowed to meet the Academy members, talk to them or even make a call to them. You just keep advertising in the 'For Consideration For Oscars' category. We took out full page ads in papers like Variety and Hollywood Reporter. The only good thing we did was that we advertised very frequently, it was promoted on the same scale as the biggest of films. We did it because we could afford it." (Movie Mag, May 2006)
"I felt Asoka (2001) should have been chosen for the Oscars. We had worked towards that. We had these international distributors for it. We were the first to actually release an Indian film internationally in traditionally non-Indian theaters. We spent a lot of money and lost a lot of money too. We were the first to put up boardings in London, in tube stations. We did speak to everyone who was anyone here, wondering if Asoka could go to the Oscars. But the one that got chosen was Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001) which was even better. So we had no complaints. After that I didn't make any film for the foreign market." (Movie Mag, May 2006)
You must respect your seniors, bu never get intimidated by them. Winning should be a habit, not an option. The four Hs are important when you play to win --- honesty, humor, hard work and a bit of haraamipan.
I don't look at the figures that my movies make. The only figures I look at are girl's figures. (When asked to comment on what he felt about the figures his movies gross.)
Whenever I fail as a father or husband... a toy and a diamond always works.
If I talk to a girl, it's assumed that I'm having a scene with her. If I don't, then it's assumed that I'm gay.

The dream I chased, took me on a journey. A journey more rewarding then the goals, the achievements. When I look back it's like facing a million mirrors. Each reflection opens a window. A window to the world I've just discovered. The world I want to share with all of you.

Personal Quotes
I'm just average woman with average concerns.
Life will take its toll on all of us. We get injured, we get old. It's really sad to try to run away from these harsh realities of life. Looks are not everything. I am not going to look beautiful all the time.
You give to the world your greatest gift when you're being yourself.
I believe that as an actress all my fears and phobias exist till I sign on the dotted line for a film.
I don't believe in proving a point to anybody. Nobody is that important.
It's strange that Rakesh Roshan thinks I look older than Hrithik. In fact, he's approached me for all his home productions.
I always knew I would be successful. So there was no element of surprise.
I know for a fact that if there's a role which I am suited for, I'll be signed on. I'll never go begging.
"I only entered Miss India after pressure from friends and because I thought it would be a laugh".
Comedy is difficult for an actor. But I think I have a good sense of humor and manage to make people laugh and make them happy.
On donating her eyes after death - "People know me more because of my eyes. So, I decided to donate my eyes. But before that, I acquired all the information about the campaign. Within what time after death one has to donate eyes, and all other information. Only then I decided to donate my eyes. It's not that just for doing something, I donated my eyes. I found that useful so I did it. I like to do social service from my heart. Whatever is possible I do, but I don't speak of that. But I would like to give more time to it in the near future."
Women in the industry have been exploited very often, but there are some actors who belive that the short cut to stardom is through nudity or exposure. Such success is, in fact, very short-lived.
I have never done a kissing scene nor do I have intentions to.
About her film Chaos (2006): When this came to be early this year, I was ecstatic. I couldn't believe that I was actually going to work with Meryl Streep, someone I've always admired. In all my interviews 10 years ago people used to ask who is your favourite actor and actress and I would mention Robert de Niro and Meryl Streep. On my first trip there I met up with de Niro and my first film is with Meryl Streep, and I said, 'Oh God that's really, really cool. Really wonderful.
Ever since I went to the Cannes festival, the media overseas really encouraged me to consider the possibilities of working in the West. Then I got a call from some people who worked in the business in America, who asked me to first obviously get an agent so that they could have direct access because that's the way they work.
About turning down the role opposite Jackie Chan in the movie _Time Breaker (2004)_, "I did not have the required dates as I was busy with the shows abroad. I had to turn down the film. I have no regrets because there is always a next time."
Indian cinema has begun to be recognized globally. And it's very important for us to make our presence felt at important events such as Cannes. I feel there should be more Indian representation at festivals. India is producing such a large cross section of films. We need to be part of world cinema, and we need to do that now.
Someone asked me why I'm politically correct, even when people hit out so openly at me. But the truth is, I've never been brought up to behave any other way. I can't say anything hurtful about anyone. I just don't believe in saying mean things. I won't feel good doing that. It's strange why being well behaved is perceived as being too 'propah' and staid. This is the way I am. I'm amazed how many people feel good hitting out at me. They're welcome to do it. Earlier, they had more leeway to deny their indiscretions in print. But now on television they look pretty ridiculous denying what they say.
About the sari on the Oprah show: "I thought I'd wear one on the show, and packed two of them, in case Oprah wanted to wear one too. As luck would have it, my flight was delayed and I reached minutes before the show went on air! So I had no time to change, which is a pity. Americans love the garment but have no clue how it's tied. Oprah is very respectful and appreciative of all cultures. She was very curious about the sari and I helped her put it on, on air! She has sent me an autographed picture saying, 'Next time we change the blouse.' She was very sweet." (Rediff, May 18, 2005)
About being on the Oprah show: "Yes, I was extremely happy to be on her show. I absolutely admire her. I never thought I'd actually be meeting her -- and that too, on her show! It's so strange. But prior to our meeting, during my visit to the US for the premiere of Bride & Prejudice, I had some afternoons off and I watched Oprah. I thought how wonderful it would be to be on her show. And within a month, I was!" (Rediff, May 18, 2005)
"I am not comfortable about kissing or nudity. I am clear about what I want. I'll work only with good directors who'll offer me two-dimensional roles. The director and the role are most important." (Movie Mag International, September 2004)
About her long career in entertainment: "This is my tenth year now, so things have changed within this span of time - so drastically that when I look at the work done when I just joined, it's like, "Oh my God!" So much has changed in these ten years. You get to see how you're part of the process of change within the Indian film industry. That's all positive, that's all a good sign." (Forbes Magazine, August 25th 2005)
Her advice to aspiring professionals: "My biggest concern is always the students who are working toward a certain career - when they limit themselves to just that one option. They need to know that the world is huge - it's an ocean, and there are so many options. It's not the end of the world if they don't get to pursue an apparent childhood dream. That's really important, because you find a lot of kids who believe that they want to become a doctor or an aeronautical engineer or something, and if they don't manage to make their degree, that's the end. They feel so defeated, which is very disheartening. It's sad to know that people let themselves be limited by these aspirations." (Forbes Magazine, August 25th 2005)
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.
Life is a stage, and we are all characters. So play your part and play it well!
On why she participated in the Miss World Pageant in 1994: "For me, it went beyond being a beauty queen. For me, it was about being the 20-year-old girl from India on international platform and a lot of people actually would assume that I wasn't even educated in India because of the way I'd speak. And they'd be like, 'Have you studied in India? Do you actually speak English out there?' and, I was like, 'This is so interesting that so many people know so little about my country.' and this is exactly what I wanted to do when I set out on this little mission in my head." (Jan 2005, 60 Minutes Interview)
"Good films are good films regardless of being made in India or abroad. I believe a great story transcends cultural lines and language barriers." (American Way Magazine, 3-15-06)
I choose films with characters that I feel are relative to a woman's growth for me. In The Last Legion, I play a warrior. This was a first for me and it was a fantastic experience. I would like very much to do more action films. As for the right direction, I make my choices and always move forward one step at a time. (4-26- 06)
On her character in _Mistress of Spices (2005)_: "I have related to each character I have performed thus far, including Tilo. I am very sensitive to moods and one's inward feelings and emotions. I am a true people person and people watcher. I look forward to meeting interesting people and understanding their experiences in life." (4-26-06)
On her character in Dhoom:2 (2006): "It's the kind of character I have never essayed before. Sunehiri, my character in the film, is distinctly different from any other character you have seen me play. That's what makes her exciting to me. For the first time in my life I went through a bit of a fitness regime. Contrary to popular belief, right since modeling, to the (Miss World) title, to films, I have never been a fitness freak or exercised." (October 2006)
About director _J.P. Dutta_: "J P Dutta is a committed taskmaster. I have danced to songs before. But he always added to choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant's steps, and that was quite challenging. He would shoot an entire mukhda in one shot. To do all the songs at that level required remaining focused at all times. In that moment, I felt I became Umrao Jaan. It was interesting to deliver a performance that shows her passionate but tragic story. The film is also reflective of the art that was at its zenith in that era. The sex trade was called the performing arts then and not prostitution." (October 2006)
On Umrao Jaan (2006) being her first Urdu language film: "Since our generation speaks English, we are not very fluent in Hindi, leave alone Urdu. I loved those dialogs and the experience to work and know about that era. For me, it was a study of Urdu on the sets under the guidance of JP and Javed saab."
About Rekha: "Rekha is very inspiring. It is not necessarily relative to just one performance, but her entire career, the span of characters that she has essayed, the performances that she has delivered itself is extremely inspiring. I am inspired by her performance. But I cannot ape her." (October 2006)
On her role in Umrao Jaan (2006) :"Playing Umrao Jaan was a demanding emotional journey. When a story takes that course, it is following an entire arc; it goes through all the possible emotions. The process was satisfying, inspiring and challenging. It forced me to deliver the best in every moment." (October 2006)
On being compared to Rekha in the original version of Umrao Jaan (1981): "For me, as an actor, it's a special experience to get the opportunity to play Umrao Jaan who has been already iconised on our celluloid. When I played Paro in Devdas, I went through the same area of questioning about how my role will be compared with the ones played earlier." (rediff.com,October 2006)
"My reason for choosing a film is not to impress people. I don't choose films for the box office." (November 2006)
"The audiences feel I am part of their life so they worry about me. I think that is very sweet of them and I tell them that when I will marry I will announce it. When I get married, you'll know. I believe in marriage and it is a beautiful institution." (November 2006)
"It is a very tricky situation when you get the chance to work in English films. I do films based on characters, not to get an entry into Hollywood or whatever. In English, my Bride & Prejudice did well world over. I don't know how it did in Hindi, but I know Jurassic Park too didn't do well in Hindi. I was glad audiences worldwide liked an English film that was Indian. When I did Mistress of Spices, I did it for Paul [Mayeda Berges, the director and husband of Gurinder Chadha] as a team. The film found its audiences. When the Provoked script came to me, I felt it was a very important story of an Indian woman based in London who killed her husband because of marital abuse. Kiranjit Ahluwalia made a big impression in England, and so I did this film because I felt it was an important story to be told. Provoked is an important film for many other Kirans in the world." (November 2006)
As far as The Last Legion (2007) is concerned, it is a film based on a book [A novel by Valerio Manfredi]. I don't think the character of Meera [her role] is there in the book. I did the film for the new experience and it is for the first time that I was with a complete foreign crew. Working with Ben Kingsley was a great experience. Meera is an Indian in the film and she has great roots and you will identify with her strength. I feel for Indian audiences, and want them to feel pride in what I am doing: I am not doing films just to be there as guest appearances.
On celebrating her 33rd birthday: "I am just not the birthday bash kind. My day will start with a visit to the Siddhivinayak temple with my family, something I do every year. There will be no loud parties... my birthday is a very private affair. Concidering I have to leave for Dubai tomorrow, it will be over early too. Only family and friends will be there." (November 1, 2006)
On the rumors that her black eye was the result of abuse by Salman Khan: "For some perverse reason, no one wants to believe me, that I fell down the stairs. First the media calls me the woman of the millennium, a woman of substance. Then how can the same media make me out to be such a doormat? I'm a self-respecting woman, I don't take nonsense from anyone. No one tries caveman tactics on me. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger can fall and get hurt, so why should I be any different?"
I have never deliberately driven attention to the fact that I am working in Hollywood films. I have categorically stated that I am working in different kinds of films, be it British, Hindi, Tamil or Bengali. It's all about doing films, which are my passion.
On meeting producer Harvey Weinstein for the first time at the 2005 Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People: "He is a big fan of Indian films. He has seen Devdas (2002/I), and said he respected my work. It's a big compliment coming from somebody who has such an immense body of work and yet is so humble from him? He discussed a few ideas and scripts with me. He is starting his own company. We are discussing projects. Time will tell all."
On attending the dinner for Time Magazines 100 Most Influential People of the Year in 2005: "I am surprised at my life's turn of events. Six of us were asked to raise the toast for the evening. And I raised it for my parents and for my fans, without whom I wouldn't have reached where I am today. Nicole Kidman had to rush out for some premiere, but she said that she and her son loved Bride and Prejudice and I told her how I loved all her performances. Sean Penn told me that I spoke well and I told him that I've always been his fan!"
Upon hearing that Julia Roberts had said that Aishwarya was the most beautiful woman she had ever seen: "That was embarrassing; at first I didn't believe she said that. I thought it was a rumor started by a journalist. But it's sweet. She's an incredible actor and she seems like a wonderful person, so all you can do is say, Thank you." (April 2007)
"I am not comfortable about kissing or nudity. I've never said I'd never kiss, or whatever on screen. I've always maintained I'd cross that bridge when I come to it. Again, I'm accused of playing it safe. The truth is, I don't know what tomorrow holds. So I can't make a close ended principle about it." (2007)
Her thoughts on modern women versus the queens of the era of Jodhaa Akbar (2008): I consider myself lucky to be born in today's era where a woman has far more freedom to exercise her rights. It took them ages to get ready for one appearance, and imagine staying behind curtains all day long. (2008)
On being voted the most bankable Bollywood star in Hollywood: Wow! Me the most bankable Bollywood star in Hollywood? Thank you! I must confess that any acknowledgment of hard work makes me feel content. In all humility I want to thank all those who feel I'm bankable.
God has given me plenty of reasons to smile and I feel it's time to spread it around. There are a lot of children out there who so desperately need help, but can't receive timely care because their families cannot afford this surgery or are ill-educated about this condition.

Today, he is counted amongst the top stars of Bollywood, comparable to the likes of Shahrukh Khan and Aamir Khan. In the course of his career till date, he has been a part of the highest earning films of five distinct years.

Childhood and Early Life
Salman Khan was born as ‘Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan’ on 27th December 1965, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He is the son of Salim Khan, a scriptwriter who gave hit films like Sholay and Don, and his first wife, Salma Khan. He was one of the five children of his parents, the other being two sons, Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan, and two daughters, Alvira and Arpita. In the late-1980s, Salman Khan started visiting producers and auditioning for roles. He debuted in the film industry, in a supporting role, in 1988, with the movie ‘Biwi Ho To Aisi’.

Career
Salman Khan’s debut as a leading actor came with Sooraj R. Barjatya's ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, which was released in 1989. The movie went on to become one of the most successful films of that time and also got him Filmfare Best Male Debut Award, apart from a nomination for Filmfare Best Actor Award. In 1990, he was seen in ‘Baaghi’, with South Indian actress Nagma, which turned out to be another major hit. The following year, Salman Khan starred in a number of films, including ‘Patthar Ke Phool’, ‘Sanam Bewafa’ and ‘Saajan’.

The movie ‘Saajan’ established him as an actor who could perform some serious roles too and helped him move away from the ‘romantic guy’ image. However, the initial success could not guarantee future hits and almost all his 1992-1993 releases turned out to be flops. It was in 1994 that Salman Khan became the king of box office once again, when Sooraj Barjatya’s ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ hit the theaters. The movie turned out to be one of the highest grossers of all times and also won him his second nomination for Filmfare Best Actor Award.

The same year, Salman Khan was seen in ‘Andaz Apna Apna’, ‘Sangdil Sanam’ and ‘Chaand Kaa Tukdaa’. None of them were box-office hits, but the first one did establish his talent in the field of comedy. In 1995 came Rakesh Roshan's ‘Karan Arjun’, in which he co-starred with Shahrukh Khan. The film went on to become the second biggest hit of the year and Salman Khan bagged a nomination for Filmfare Best Actor Award. With the arrival of 1996 came Sanjay Leela Bhansali's ‘Khamoshi: The Musical’ and Raj Kanwar's ‘Jeet’.

While the first movie received tremendous critically acclaim, the second one made excellent business at the box office. ‘Judwaa’ and ‘Auzaar’ were Salman Khan’s releases in the year 1997, with the former being quite a success. In 1998, he starred in the comedy ‘Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya’, which was one of the biggest commercial successes of that year. The same year, he was also seen in the moderately successful ‘Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai’. Then came Karan Johar's directorial debut, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’.

In ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, Salman Khan played a supporting role and ended up receiving his second Filmfare Award, this time under the Best Supporting Actor category. The year 1999 saw him in films like ‘Hum Saath-Saath Hain’, ‘Biwi No.1’ and ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’. While the first was moderately successful, the other two went on to become major box-office hits. With ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, he got another Best Actor nomination at Filmfare. Salman Khan was seen in around six films in the year 2000.

Of these, two - ‘Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega’ and ‘Chori Chori Chupke Chupke’ did average business, while the rest were failures. ‘Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam’, his much-delayed film with Madhuri and Shahrukh, was released in 2002, but barely managed to earn its worth. Success continued to evade Salman Khan till 2003, when ‘Tere Naam’ was released. Not only was the movie a major hit, but it also earned him great comments from the critics. The same year, he was seen in ‘Baghban’, which got him nomination for Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award.

Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004) and No Entry (2005) were his other hit films. The year 2006 was rather unlucky for Salman Khan, as his films failed to do well at the box office. Even his first 2007 release ‘Salaam E Ishq’ did not manage to charm the audience. However, with the success of ‘Partner’ (2007), he again came back in the top league. His first Hollywood movie, Marigold: An Adventure in India’, was a commercial as well as critical failure. In 2008, Salman Khan entered the small screen, with the game show, ‘Dus Ka Dum’.

Personal Life
Since the past many years, Salman Khan has been known for his amazing body. He is one of the first actors who realized the importance of bodybuilding and having six-pack abs. In 2004, People magazine of U.S. voted him as the 7th best-looking man in the World and the best looking man in India. He has had relationships with a number of females in the past, which include Sangeeta Bijlani, Somy Ali and Aishwarya Rai. Touted to be the ‘Most Eligible Bachelor’ of Bollywood, he has been dating model-turned-actress Katrina Kaif since 2003.

Despite his tough guy and angry young man image, Salman Khan has always been the favorite of the audience. Behind his tough stance is a sensitive heart that constantly indulges in charities and loves to bring a smile on people’s face. In October 2007, he accepted an offer to have his wax replica in Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in London. The life-size wax statue was installed there in January 2008. Salman Khan is the step-son of the yesteryears diva Helen and has Malaika Arora Khan as his sister-in-law (Arbaaz’s wife) and Atul Agnihotri as his brother-in-law (Alvira’s husband).

Controversies
Throughout his career, Salman Khan has been involved in several controversies. In September 2002, he was arrested for rash and negligent driving. This was when his car rammed into a Mumbai bakery, killing one person and injuring three. Though the charge of culpable homicide was later dropped, he is still in trial for lesser charges related to the accident. In 2006, he was convicted for hunting the endangered ‘Chinkara’, during the shoot of film ‘Hum Saath Saath Hai’. Later, he was granted bail by the police. His affair as well as break-up with Aishwarya was much publicized and she also accused him of harassing her.

Mini Biography
A long road traveled; from a waiter in Bangkok, to one of the most successful actors in Bollywood, Akshay Kumar has come a long way. As an instructor in martial artist, Rajiv Bhatia always dreamt of making it big in that field but when a student suggested that with his good looks and a good built, he should take up modelling, the anonymous Rajiv Bhatia began his journey as Akshay Kumar who then slowly but surely worked his way up to becoming one of the most talented stars of the industry. Stunned at the pay package and his success as a model, Akshay took the next obvious step, and entered into films. However unlike most of the other stars in his time, Akshay neither had star parents, nor a godfather to launch him. Although his first few films were unsuccessful at the box office, they helped Akshay get noticed for his dancing abilities and his dare-devilish stunts. His first true hit film was 'Khiladi' and although it was a success, the top banners continued to be elusive until 'Yeh Dillagi' which not only got him recognition but marked his position as a top league actor. Though 'Jai Kishen' and 'Main Khiladi Tu Anari' were quite successful at the box office, it was 'Mohra' and 'Sabse Bada Khiladi' that it catapulted Akshay to fame and established his position as one of the top most heroes of the industry. With a series of 'Khiladi' movies including the "Khiladiyon Ke Khiladi', Akshay became the quintessential "action hero'. But with 'Mr. & Mrs. Khiladi', 'Dil To Pagal Hai' and 'Aflatoon', he attempted new genres in order to change his stereotypical image, and he was quite successful at it. Another attempt at a new role with 'Ajnabee', where he played the villain, was again well portrayed and well received by audiences and critics alike. 'Dhadkan', where he starred opposite Shilpa Shetty reaffirmed the fact that aside from being an action hero, Akshay Kumar was also the perfect romantic lead. In the same year came another memorable performance with the film "Hera Pheri' which brought to the forefront his strength in comedy and superb timing as he held his ground with the seasoned Paresh Rawal and Suniel Shetty. Akshay Kumar continued to improve with every film, from "Khakee, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi', "Aitraaz, Waqt', 'Awara Pagaal Deewana', "Garam Masala' to the recently released "Phir Hera Phiri' proved that Akshay was a sure-fire hit at the box-office as well. Today he is one of the most sought after actors who commands a strong box-office opening. His forthcoming films include Jaaneman, Saamna, London Namaste and Welcome

Indian Actress Beheaded Biography

Source(google.com.pk)
An aspiring Bollywood actress was murdered by two fellow actors she 'befriended on the set of her latest film'.

Meenakshi Thapa, 26, was kidnapped and beheaded last month by Amit Jaiswal and his lover Preeti Surin in an attempt to receive a ransom payment.

She had met the pair on the set of Madhur Bhandarkar's yet-to-be-released film Heroine, where she had a bit-part role.

Thapa's mother is believed to have paid 60,000 (£730) Rupees for her release, but never saw her daughter again.

Detective have said they believe she was strangled in a hotel and her body was hacked into pieces and thrown in a water tank.

Then in a final act of callous depravity her head was thrown from a moving bus on its way to Mumbai.

Mumbai crime branch policemen recovered the body from Surin's house in Allahabad on Wednesday.

Jaiswal and Surin confessed the crime to the Mumbai Police after their arrest on Saturday night and said they were taken in by Thapa's pretentious stories about her 'affluent family'.

'The accused believed that Thapa was from a wealthy family because her lifestyle, despite not landing a big film role, hid the fact that she actually came from a middle-class background.

They plotted to kidnap her for a ransom of 1,500,000 Rupees (£18,000) and kill her after the payment was made,' a police officer said.

Thapa was a struggling actress who earlier played a minor role in last year's horror film 404 and she appeared in some TV commercials. Her Nepalese-origin family has settled in Dehradun some years ago. Like her, Jaiswal and Surin were struggling for a toehold in the film industry.

The duo lured Thapa to travel with them to Gorakhpur. There they held her hostage and called up her family demanding the ransom. The police said they told Thapa's mother that they would drug her daughter and make a pornographic film if she didn't deposit the money in the victim's account. They also took her debit card.

The mother deposited 60,000 Rupees in Thapa's account, but that didn't save her daughter.

A police officer said: 'They returned to Mumbai from Allahabad by bus. On their way they threw out the bag.'

In the meantime, Thapa's brother registered a complaint with the police in Dehradun on March 17 about his missing sister. The Mumbai Police were promptly alerted.Beautiful young Bollywood actress Meenakshi Thapar, 26, was kidnapped, strangled and beheaded by her two co-stars.

STORY: GLOBAL CRAZY! A Six-Legged Baby Boy Born In Sukkur, Pakistan

Thapar was killed by two aspiring actors whom she met on the set of her latest film Heroine.

According to the Telegraph, police say Amit Jaiswal and his girlfriend Preeti Surin allegedly lured Thapar on a trip with them to Gorakhpur, a small town known for its Buddhist temple.

During the trip, the two reportedly held Thapar hostage and threatened her mother that they would force Thapar to do pornography if their demands were not met.

The two kidnappers asked for a ransom of 150,000 rupees, which is about $28,000, but her mother paid only 60,000 rupees which is about $1,150 - and never saw her daughter again.

The couple strangled and beheaded Thapar and dumped her torso in a water tank before throwing her head out of a bus window.

A detective told the Telegraph:

“They wanted to extort money from her family. They have confessed to the crime. She was strangulated in a hotel and her body was hacked into pieces and thrown in a water tank. They threw her head from a moving bus while traveling back to Mumbai."

The couple was busted when they were caught with Thapar’s cell phone SIM card and confessed to the killing.

Authorities are hoping the accused killers can lead them to the actress’ body.

Meenakshi Thapar, 26, who had appeared in the Indian horror film 404 last year, met the two aspiring actors who allegedly later killed her on the set of her latest film, Heroine.

Amit Jaiswal, 36, and his lover Preeti Surin, allegedly decided to kidnap Ms Thapar after listening to her boast about her family’s wealth and status in Dehra Dun, in the Himalayan foothills of northern India.

They allegedly invited her on a trip with them to Gorakhpur, a small town close to India’s border with Nepal and known for its Buddhist temples, where they held her hostage and sent a message to Ms Thapar’s Nepali parents demanding 1,500,000 Rupees (£18,000).

According to police, her ‘fellow actors’ warned her mother they would force her daughter to take part in pornography films if their demands were not met.

Her mother paid 60,000 Rupees (£730) into her daughter’s account for her kidnappers to withdraw, but she was allegedly killed soon after. She was strangled to death, beheaded, and her body was dumped at two different sites as her killers made their way back to Mumbai. Her torso was dumped in a water tank and her head thrown out of the bus window in a bag on the road to Mumbai. Jaiswal and Surin were later caught in possession of Ms Thapar’s mobile phone SIM and confessed to the murder.

According to police, the couple had fled to Mumbai from their home in Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh, after Jaiswal’s wife discovered their affair.

They had moved to India’s film city hoping to find stardom in its Bollywood studios.

“We are still investigating the case and both the accused along with a police team are visiting the crime spot. We have yet to recover the body.

“They wanted to extort money from her family. They have confessed to the crime. She was strangulated in a hotel and her body was hacked into pieces and thrown in a water tank. They threw her head from a moving bus while traveling back to Mumbai,” a detective leading the inquiry told The Daily Telegraph.

Personal Quotes

I'm just an average woman with average concerns.

It's strange that Rakesh Roshan thinks I look older than Hrithik Roshan. In fact, he's approached me for all his home productions.

I always knew I would be successful. So there was no element of surprise.

I know for a fact that if there's a role which I am suited for, I'll be signed on. I'll never go begging.

I only entered Miss India after pressure from friends and because I thought it would be a laugh.

Comedy is difficult for an actor. But I think I have a good sense of humor and manage to make people laugh and make them happy.

[on donating her eyes after death] People know me more because of my eyes. So I decided to donate my eyes. But I would like to give more time to it in the near future.

Women in the industry have been exploited very often, but there are some actors who belive that the short cut to stardom is through nudity or exposure. Such success is, in fact, very short-lived.

I have never done a kissing scene nor do I have intentions to.

[About Chaos (2006)] When this came to be early this year, I was ecstatic. I couldn't believe that I was actually going to work with Meryl Streep, someone I've always admired. In all my interviews 10 years ago people used to ask who is your favorite actor and actress and I would mention 'Robert de Niro' and Meryl Streep. On my first trip there I met up with de Niro and my first film is with Meryl Streep, and I said, "Oh God that's really, really cool. Really wonderful."

Ever since I went to the Cannes festival, the media overseas really encouraged me to consider the possibilities of working in the West. Then I got a call from some people who worked in the business in America, who asked me to first obviously get an agent so that they could have direct access because that's the way they work.

[About turning down the role opposite Jackie Chan in The Myth (2005)] I did not have the required dates as I was busy with the shows abroad. I had to turn down the film. I have no regrets because there is always a next time.

It's strange why being well behaved is perceived as being too "propah" and staid. This is the way I am. I'm amazed how many people feel good hitting out at me. They're welcome to do it. Earlier, they had more leeway to deny their indiscretions in print. But now on television they look pretty ridiculous denying what they say.

[About the sari she wore on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" (1986)] I thought I'd wear one on the show, and packed two of them, in case Oprah wanted to wear one, too. She has sent me an autographed picture saying, "Next time we change the blouse". She was very sweet.

[About being on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" (1986)] Yes, I was extremely happy to be on her show. I absolutely admire her. I never thought I'd actually be meeting her--and that, too, on her show! It's so strange. But prior to our meeting, during my visit to the US for the premiere of Bride & Prejudice (2004), I had some afternoons off and I watched Oprah. I thought how wonderful it would be to be on her show. And within a month, I was!"

[in September 2004] I am not comfortable about kissing or nudity. I am clear about what I want. I'll work only with good directors who'll offer me two-dimensional roles. The director and the role are most important.

[IN 2005, about her long career in entertainment] This is my tenth year now, so things have changed within this span of time--so drastically that when I look at the work done when I just joined, it's like, "Oh my God!" So much has changed in these ten years. You get to see how you're part of the process of change within the Indian film industry. That's all positive, that's all a good sign.

[Her advice to aspiring professionals] My biggest concern is always the students who are working toward a certain career--when they limit themselves to just that one option. They need to know that the world is huge--it's an ocean, and there are so many options. It's sad to know that people let themselves be limited by these aspirations.

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

Life is a stage, and we are all characters. So play your part and play it well!

[on why she participated in the Miss World Pageant in 1994] For me, it went beyond being a beauty queen. For me, it was about being the 20-year-old girl from India on [an] international platform and a lot of people actually would assume that I wasn't even educated in India because of the way I'd speak. And they'd be like, "Have you studied in India? Do you actually speak English out there?" and, I was like, "This is so interesting that so many people know so little about my country", and this is exactly what I wanted to do when I set out on this little mission in my head.

[In 2006] Good films are good films regardless of being made in India or abroad. I believe a great story transcends cultural lines and language barriers.

[In 2006] I choose films with characters that I feel are relative to a woman's growth for me. In The Last Legion (2007), I play a warrior. This was a first for me and it was a fantastic experience. I would like very much to do more action films. As for the right direction, I make my choices and always move forward one step at a time.

[on her character in The Mistress of Spices (2005)] I have related to each character I have performed thus far, including Tilo. I am very sensitive to moods and one's inward feelings and emotions. I am a true people person and people watcher. I look forward to meeting interesting people and understanding their experiences in life.

[on her character in Dhoom:2 (2006)] It's the kind of character I have never essayed before. Sunehiri, my character in the film, is distinctly different from any other character you have seen me play. That's what makes her exciting to me. For the first time in my life I went through a bit of a fitness regime. Contrary to popular belief, right since modeling, to the [Miss World] title, to films, I have never been a fitness freak or exercised.

[About director J.P. Dutta] . . . a committed taskmaster. The sex trade was called the performing arts then and not prostitution.

[on Umrao Jaan (2006) being her first Urdu-language film] Since our generation speaks English, we are not very fluent in Hindi, leave alone Urdu. I loved those dialogs and the experience to work and know about that era. For me, it was a study of Urdu on the sets under the guidance of JP and Javed Saab.

[About Rekha] Rekha is very inspiring. It is not necessarily relative to just one performance, but her entire career, the span of characters that she has essayed, the performances that she has delivered itself is extremely inspiring. I am inspired by her performance. But I cannot ape her.

[on her role in Umrao Jaan (2006)] Playing Umrao Jaan was a demanding emotional journey. When a story takes that course, it is following an entire arc; it goes through all the possible emotions. The process was satisfying, inspiring and challenging. It forced me to deliver the best in every moment.

[on being compared to Rekha in Umrao Jaan (1981)] For me, as an actor, it's a special experience to get the opportunity to play Umrao Jaan who has been already iconised on our celluloid. When I played Paro in Devdas (2002/I), I went through the same area of questioning about how my role will be compared with the ones played earlier.

[In 2006] My reason for choosing a film is not to impress people. I don't choose films for the box office.

[in 2006] The audiences feel I am part of their life so they worry about me. I think that is very sweet of them and I tell them that when I will marry I will announce it. When I get married, you'll know. I believe in marriage and it is a beautiful institution.

[In 2006] It is a very tricky situation when you get the chance to work in English films. I do films based on characters, not to get an entry into Hollywood or whatever. In English, my _Bride & Prejudice (2005)_ (qv ) did well world over. I don't know how it did in Hindi, but I know _Jurassic Park (1998)_ didn't do well in Hindi. I was glad audiences worldwide liked an English film that was Indian. When I did The Mistress of Spices (2005), I did it for Paul [Paul Mayeda Berges, the director and husband of Gurinder Chadha] as a team. The film found its audiences. When the [Provoked: A True Story (2006)] script came to me, I felt it was a very important story of an Indian woman based in London who killed her husband because of marital abuse. Kiran Ahluwalia made a big impression in England, and so I did this film because I felt it was an important story to be told. "Provoked" is an important film for many other Kirans in the world.

[on celebrating her 33rd birthday] I am just not the birthday bash kind. My day will start with a visit to the Siddhivinayak temple with my family, something I do every year. There will be no loud parties . . . my birthday is a very private affair. Concidering I have to leave for Dubai tomorrow, it will be over early, too. Only family and friends will be there.

[on the rumors that her black eye was the result of abuse by Salman Khan] For some perverse reason, no one wants to believe me, that I fell down the stairs. First the media calls me the woman of the millennium, a woman of substance. Then how can the same media make me out to be such a doormat? I'm a self-respecting woman, I don't take nonsense from anyone. No one tries caveman tactics on me. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger can fall and get hurt, so why should I be any different?

I have never deliberately driven attention to the fact that I am working in Hollywood films. I have categorically stated that I am working in different kinds of films, be it British, Hindi, Tamil or Bengali. It's all about doing films, which are my passion.

[on meeting producer Harvey Weinstein for the first time at the 2005 Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People] He is a big fan of Indian films. He has seen Devdas (2002/I) and said he respected my work. It's a big compliment coming from somebody who has such an immense body of work and yet is so humble from him? He discussed a few ideas and scripts with me. He is starting his own company. We are discussing projects. Time will tell all.

[on attending the dinner for Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of the Year in 2005] I am surprised at my life's turn of events. Six of us were asked to raise the toast for the evening. And I raised it for my parents and for my fans, without whom I wouldn't have reached where I am today. Nicole Kidman had to rush out for some premiere, but she said that she and her son loved Bride & Prejudice (2004) and I told her how I loved all her performances. Sean Penn told me that I spoke well and I told him that I've always been his fan!

[Upon hearing that Julia Roberts had said that Aishwarya was the most beautiful woman she had ever seen] That was embarrassing; at first I didn't believe she said that. I thought it was a rumor started by a journalist. But it's sweet. She's an incredible actor and she seems like a wonderful person, so all you can do is say, "Thank you"

[In 2007] I am not comfortable about kissing or nudity. I've never said I'd never kiss, or whatever on screen. I've always maintained I'd cross that bridge when I come to it. Again, I'm accused of playing it safe. The truth is, I don't know what tomorrow holds. So I can't make a close ended principle about it.

[Her thoughts on modern women versus the queens of the era of Jodhaa Akbar (2008)] I consider myself lucky to be born in today's era where a woman has far more freedom to exercise her rights. It took them ages to get ready for one appearance, and imagine staying behind curtains all day long.

[on being voted the most bankable Bollywood star in Hollywood] Wow!

[In 1999] I'm like the Terminator. I won't stop till I win. Just everything must be perfect.
